Federal Student Loans
It’s free to apply for federal student loan programs directly with the U.S. Department of Education at https://studentaid.gov. You can also work with your loan servicer, but https://studentaid.gov generally has the most current guidance, forms, and step-by-step tools. Below are quick links to commonly used DOE resources.
Have questions? We’re happy to help you understand the basics and point you to the right DOE resources at no cost. If you’d prefer hands-on assistance completing documents, we may introduce you to independent document preparation providers. These services are optional, may charge fees (only after you have a new loan and at
least one payment is made towards that loan per FTC Guidelines), and are not required to access federal benefits. The same applications are available free at (https://studentaid.gov). Always review provider terms carefully before engaging any third party.
Note: Money Student is an independent financial education and referral platform. We are not affiliated with or endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education or any loan servicer.
